NSS POLICY

1. ABOUT THE POLICY

            The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a voluntary organisation run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in Central Government and by the Department of Higher and Technical Education in the State. NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. The aim of the scheme is to inculcate a sense of social responsibility in the volunteers through self less community service fulfilling the motto of the scheme i.e. NOT ME, BUT YOU. Volunteers learn through NSS to understand and serve the community which infuses in them a sense of involvement towards Nation building. Voluntary participation in community service imparts a sense of consideration and compassion towards others making them responsible citizens.

 

2. VISION

            To develop a sense of social and civic responsibility in the volunteers.

 

3. MISSION

            The mission of the scheme is to make volunteers capable of understanding the community in which they live and its problems and how they can use their knowledge and available resources in problem solving.

 

4. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

  1. To promote voluntary participation by the students in various activities for community service.
  2. To develop a sense of responsibility sharing and resource sharing in the volunteers.
  3. To serve the community in a self less manner where volunteers learn to be considerate and compassionate towards other living beings.
  4. To make the volunteers capable of taking initiatives and decision making.
  5. To sensitize the volunteers about social issues time to time.
  6. To practice social harmony and National integration.

 

5. STRATEGIES AND ACTION PLANS

A. Components of NSS

(i) NSS Programme Officers (POs): A member of the teaching faculty who provides necessary leadership to the volunteers

 

(ii) NSS Volunteers: A student of the college (UG/PG).

 

(iii) Community- From where, volunteers gain firsthand knowledge of mass living conditions along with their problems. A nearby village is adopted for a period of three years for community service by the volunteers.

 

B. Selection criteria

            New students are enrolled as NSS volunteers at the start of Academic Session on first come first basis. 100 boys and 100 girls constitute two NSS Units at College level. Volunteers are required to fill an enrolment per forma for required details and to be forwarded to the Monitoring Authority.

 

 

 

C. NSS Activities

(i) Special Camping Programme:    Special Camping Programme includes a 7 days camp which is organised during vacations. 50% of the total enrolled volunteers are required to participate in the camp. Various activities like Yoga Camp, Blood donation camp, A visit to old age home, Cleanliness drive at the adopted village and college campus, Waste to Best competitions, Awareness Rally dedicated to key issues in the society etc. are organized during this camp  ensuring the overall personality enhancement of the volunteers.

 

(ii) Regular Activities: Regular Activities include all events/ activities which are organised throughout the session which includes Van Mahotsava, Observance of various days of National and International Importance, Cleanliness drives, Voluntary service, Webinar/seminar participation or all other activities as guided by the Monitoring Authority time to time.

 

D. Certification

            Volunteers are awarded ‘A’ ‘B’ and ‘C’ level certificates.

            ‘A’ certificate is awarded for actively participating in 7days special camp and in regular activities of NSS for whole session.

            ‘B’ certificate is awarded for two special camp participations (each 7 days) along with regular activities of NSS for two sessions.

            ‘C’ certificate is highest level of certificate for three active participations in special camping programme (7days each) along with regular NSS activities for three sessions.

 

6. MONITORING AUTHORITY

            NSS Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh is the monitoring authority and college NSS unit performs under the directive/guidance of monitoring Authority

therefore always free from repetition
