Policy on Green Campus & Environment Audit

1. ABOUT THE POLICY

            Green environment management is essential for sustainable development and environment policy is designed in tune with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030, realizing that protection of environment is part of the institution’s social responsibility for the survival of humanity.

 

2. VISION

                        The vision of the policy is to “Go Green to Breathe Clean” and to “Live Life Cleaner by making Earth Greener”.

 

3. MISSION

  1. To protect and conserve ecological systems and resources within the campus.
  2. To ensure judicious use of environmental resources to meet the needs and aspirations of the present and future generations.
  3. To integrate environmental concerns into policies, plans and programs for social development and outreach activities.
  4. To work with the local community to raise awareness and seek the adoption of environmental good practices.
  5. To continuously improve our contribution to climate protection and adaptation to climate change and to the conservation of global resources.
  6. To reduce consumption and the amount of waste produced, recovering and recycling waste where ever possible.
  7. To conduct environmental and green audits from time to time.
  8. To minimize the use of paper in administration by having a policy for E-governance.

 

4. OBJECTIVES OF THE POLICY

  1. To create green campus for environment protection and conservation of natural resources.
  2. To implement an efficient recycling Programme for wastes like solid, liquid and electric.
  3. To implement green campus initiatives in a time bound manner.
  4. To incorporate the water harvesting, waste management, energy conservation, greenery etc. into organizational development and budgeting process.
  5. To seek the contribution of the faculty, supportive staff and students of the institution for creating a self-sustainable and eco-friendly campus.
  6. To develop environmental ethics and value system.

 

5. STRATEGIES AND ACTION PLANS

A) Clean Campus Initiatives: A.S. College had pledged to actively coordinate cleanliness activities in the college and beyond the campus. The broad vision is as follows:

 

(i) Activities for college cleanliness done under NSS, NCC and ECO-Club: Volunteers of the college shall be engaged for positive input and transformation in the cleanliness drive carried out in college and nearby villages.

 

(ii) Generating mass awareness on cleanliness and hygiene amongst students and staff members by holding regular cleanliness drives. The idea is to motivate them to contribute in a proactive manner.

(iii) Events such as poster and slogan competitions, essay writing, spoken word poetry, speeches, skits on ‘Swachh Bharat’ will be organised.

 

(iv) Removal and proper disposal of all kinds of waste material like broken furniture, unusable equipment etc.

 

(v) Commit to manage waste and maintain clean campus especially during college events.

 

(vi) Taking initiatives to create a plastic free campus.

 

B) Landscaping Initiatives: There a lot of plants on campus along with vast grass cover. The landscape of trees and plants provide the 1600+ students and staff with clean and cool air and is a soothing environment.

            The diverse green cover of ASC is also home to a number of birds, creating a campus rich in Encouraging student societies to hold tree planting events.

Bio diversity: The college is commited to enriching this healthy habitat and maintaining the symbiotic relation of the institution with nature by organizing annual Van Mahotsav to create a large pool of flora and fauna.

 

C) Clean Air Initiatives: The campus is also located near the green fields and least polluted area on the outskirts of Khanna. The abundant natural landscape not only refreshes the air on campus but also becomes an extension of the green lungs of the city.

  • The use of public transportation is encouraged among our students and staff.
  • Carpooling to college, an activity that is helpful in controlling air pollution and strengthens social interaction would be encouraged.
  • The campus is maintained as a smoking free institution.

        

         D) Infrastructural Initiatives

         (i) Renewable Sources of Energy: ASC is dedicated to minimize and sustainably manage its use of electricity.

    • To reduce the consumption of electricity produced by non- renewable resources by switching to clean energy sources like solar energy for purposes like lighting the campus.

 

(ii) Energy Saving and Energy Efficient Equipment

    • The college is committed to install environment-friendly electrical appliances that save energy and reduce wasteful inefficiencies.
  • The college believes in using cleaner energy such as LED lighting.

 

E) Waste Management Processes: The following specific procedures are being undertaken to ensure ASC’s contribution in protecting the environment.

 

(i) Solid Waste Management: The college has adopted practices that mitigate the generation, and manage solid waste through the following methods:

  • Systematically engage with the 3Rs of environment friendliness (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle).
  • Collect paper waste produced on campus and collaborate with scrap dealers for recycling.
      • Reduce requirement of printed books by updating the e-books and e- journals collection of the college library.
      • Encouraging the students and teachers to use emails for assignment submissions.
        • Minimizing the use of packaged food.
        • The habit of reusing and recycling non-biodegradable products.
        • Organizing workshops for students on solid waste management.

 

(ii) Liquid Waste Management

  • Maintain leak proof water fixtures.
  • Continued employment of a caretaker to take immediate steps to stop any water leakage through taps, pipes, tanks, toilet flush etc.

 

(iii) E-Waste Management: For this purpose, the college plans to strive towards

  • Awareness amongst students about reduction of e-waste and environment friendly disposal practices for e-waste, such as disposal in designated e- waste bins only.
  • Encouraging department and society level activities pertaining to e-waste management.

 

(iv) Rainwater Harvesting

  • In continuation with its efforts for sustainable development, A.S. College, Khanna has set up a Rain water harvesting system to harness the rain water during rains and use it for diverse purposes.
  • This is a remarkable step to conserve water and hence conservation of energy.

 

(v) Conduct Green Audit

  • A.S. College aims to regularly conduct a Green Audit of our college campus to assess our strengths and weaknesses to further our goals of long-term sustainability.

 

As per the outcome of green audit:

  • The college would consider how to implement changes and make savings.
  • It would determine the recycling projects or waste minimization plans which should be adopted.

 

F) Action Plans: The Institution will strive for its continued measures in the direction of green campus and environmental sustainability by carrying on these efforts

  1. Continue with efforts to conserve water and energy
  2. Continue the practice of Annual Van Mahostav and tree plantation
  3. The use of solar energy will be continued
  4. Use of e-waste recycling bin will be encouraged
  5. Green audit of the college campus will be undertaken
  6. Awareness programmes for environment conservation through NSS, Eco Club and departments will be continued
  7. Storage of chemicals like: paints, gums, resins, oils, acids etc. in a designated place and display of safety/warning signs
  8. Internal inspection systems should be developed for various equipment available in campus

    6. MONITORING AGENCIES

                ASC encourages all the departments and specific student societies to organize events, competitions and training sessions that will bring about positive environmental changes at the grassroots level.
