English Department

Language Lab: Language lab helps the students to enrich themselves in the four skills of language i.e. Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. It is a self-learning process  and allows the students to reinforce material learnt in the class by putting them into practice through interactive activities. Students learn much faster in the language lab.The courses organized in the lab help the students to learn much faster than in a regular classroom setup. It boosts the motivation of students achieving higher levels in language learning.Language lab is a comprehensive tool for the college students to improve their communication skills and confidence.

Book Bank: The Department of English has a rich book bank. The book bank caters to the reading and syllabi needs of the students. The students who belong to under-privileged sections, incapable of buying their own books, come to the department and get the books issued. At the end of the session, they return the issued books so that other needy students can get them issued as per needs.

Internet: The Department provides the students easy internet access and access to the personal computer of the department. The students avail the facility during their free hours.

Human Resources: There are different whatsapp groups for the different classes of students and the students are in touch with the teachers throughout the day.Taking cognizance of COVID-19 pandemic, the teachers are alert and active in providing e-notes, sharing websites, URLs, YouTube links to the students.

Eligibility For Admission M.A(English)

The admission is open to a person who has passed one of the following examinations from the Panjab University, or from any other University whose examination has been recognised as equivalent to the corresponding examination of this University (Under 10+2+ 3 system of Education) shall be eligible to join the first year (part-I) class of the M.A. course:­

(i)   BA with Honours in the subject of the Post-Graduate Course;

(ii)  (a)Bachelor's degree in any Faculty with at least 50 per cent marks in the aggregate:

       (b) Diploma in Physical Education examination or Post-graduate Diploma in Library Science after having passed B.A. or B. Sc.

(iii)  The B.A. (Pass)/B.Sc. (Pass) examination in full subjects; obtaining at least 45 per cent marks in the elective subjects of the Postgraduate Course       

(iv)  Obtained B.A. degree, after passing examination in an Oriental Classical Language or a Modern Indian  Language with at least 45 per cent marks (out of the aggregate excluding the additional paper) at the Honours in Oriental Titles or Modern Indian Languages examination, in the subject of Post- graduate course;

(v)   Master's degree examination in another subject or another Faculty

Department Activities Session (2023-24)

1. Story Writing Competition
The P.G. Department of English of A. S. College, Khanna organized a story writing competition under the banner of English Literary Society. A total of 40 students from various streams participated in the competition. The Principal, Dr. K. K. Sharma encouraged the students to participate in such activities for their intellectual growth. Head of the department, Prof. Dinesh Kumar congratulated the students and thanked the principal for his support.

2.Screening of “Marhi da Deewa” &; Review-Writing Competition
A screening of the film adaptation of Gurdial Singh's Punjabi novel "Marhi da Deewa," translated into English as "The Last Flicker," was organized by the Department of English at A.S. College, Khanna in the seminar hall of the college. Prof. Dinesh Kumar, Head of the Department, delivered a briefing on the novel's theme to B.A. Ill and M.A. English students. Alongside Prof. Manu Verma, Prof. Disha, and Dr. Harmanjot Kaur Bhatti, students eagerly participated in the screening.Following the viewing, a review  writing competition took place, with Damanpreet Singh of B.A. III receiving recognition for crafting the finest review of the film.

1.Story Writing Competition
An online Story Writing Competition was organized by the P. G. Department of English on 1 st March 2022. The students from various streams participated enthusiastically. Kunika of B. A. Sem-VI secured 1 st , Dhwani of B. Com. Sem-II and Barinder Singh of B.C.A. Sem-IV secured 2 nd and Simarjeet Kaur of B.A. Sem-VI secured 3 rd position.

2.Poetry Writing Competition
The P.G. Department of English organized an online Poetry Writing Competition on 1 st March 2022 to nurture the creative instincts of the students. The students from various streams participated enthusiastically in the competition which was organized on 1 st March 2022. Gazal of B. Com. 2 nd year got 1 st and Seema Rani of M. Sc. Chemistry Sem-I secured 2 nd
position respectively.

3.Exhibition on “Parallel Reflections of English and Indian Literature”
The Post Graduate Department of English of A.S. College, Khanna organized an exhibition on the theme “Parallel Reflections of English and Indian Literature” under the banner of the English Literary Society dated 01-04-2022. The students of Undergraduate and Post-Graduate classes participated enthusiastically. The students displayed charts related to the historical division of English Literature and Indian Literature related to the Partition of India. The students prepared the charts on the works of prominent writers like Khushwant Singh, Amrita Pritam, Anita Desai, Saadat Hasan Manto etc.

4. One Day Educational Trip To Shimla
The P. G. Department of English, A.S. College Khanna organized a one-day Educational Trip to Shimla on 17-04-2022 under the guidance of Prof. Dinesh Kumar, Prof. Manu Verma, Prof. Disha, and Prof. Harinderjit Singh. Around 40 students from Post Graduate Department of English and Under Graduate classes went on the trip enthusiastically. The students enjoyed the scenic beauty of Shimla and roamed around the Ridge, Mall Road and other important places.
