The Department of Political Science was established in 1946 and is one of the oldest department in the area. It started post graduation in 1984. The department has maintained high standards of academic excellence and have produced 10 University Gold Medalists, 9 University Top Positions and many position holders in the merit list of the University.  11 Students have qualified UGC NET examination. Many students of the department have also excelled in sports and co-curricular activities.

The Department is regularly engaged in the activities for the overall development of the students including seminars, extension lectures, celebration of national as well as international days, quizzes, debates, educational tours etc. The special focus is given on career guidance and preparation for competitive examinations. The department has a Book Bank and provides scholarships for needy students. Almunas of the department are successfully working in  government as well as non-governmental sectors in the field of teaching and administration.

M.A(Political Science)

Program outcomes, program specific outcomes and course outcomes

Political Science concentrates on the theory and practice of government. It is a study about laws and comparative structures of the governments all around the World. There is a wide variety of options to set up career in this field such as Immigration Officer, Information Officer, Journalist, Human Right Activist, Teacher, Professor, Foreign Service Officer, Attorney General, Lobbyist, Lawyer, Political Leader, Political Commentator, etc. So, political science plays vital role to set a gracious career. It is a source of employment from grass roots to international level. 

Eligibility For Admission

The admission is open to a student who has passed B.A. with Hons. in Political Science or BA/B.Sc./B. Sc. Home Science/B. Com. with at least 50% marks or BA examination with at least 45% marks in Political Science or Public Administration or Sociology.

Session 2024-25
Departmental Achievements

1. On 17th August 2024, to celebrate World Humanitarian Day, the department organised essay writing competition on the topic, Violation of Human Rights Is A Threat To Humanity. Out of 10 participants, Mr Harshil Sharma of M.A. Sem Ist,Political Science and Miss Tanishjot Kaur of BA Sem Vth bagged first positions,Miis Liza from B.A. Sem IIIrd got second position and Miss Simranjit Kaur of M.A.Sem Ist political science won third position.

2. On 21st September 2024, to celebrate International Day of Peace, the department organised a speech competition on the theme, Cultivating A Culture of Peace. Out of 8 participants , Miss Tanishjot Kaur from BA 5th Sem, Miss Sareena from M.A Sem IIIrd Political Science and Simran Kaur from M.A. Sem Ist political science bagged first,second and third positions respectively.

3. Miss Manpreet Kaur, a brilliant student of MA Sem first Political Science was selected in Punjab Police.

4. To celebrate 15th National Voter Day ,on the theme, Nothing Like Voting , I Vote For Sure,  the department organised a series of activities

  1. Poster Making Competition was organized on 16th January, 2025 in which Student of M A Political Science  Babita Verma bagged first position , Dilpreet Kaur , Second, and  Simranjeet Kaur and Ramanpreet Kaur both bagged the third position.
  2. 93 students of Political Science from post-graduate and under-graduate classes participated in the online Quiz competition held on 19-01-2025, which was organised by Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab and the participants received E Certificates.
  3. On 20- 01-2025, a pledge ceremony was conducted in which faculty members and 45 students participated. Miss Amandeep Kaur , student of M A 4th Sem political science administered the oath.

d. On 25-01-2025, a speech competition on the topic "Right to Vote: A Cornerstone of Democracy" was organised. Out of 8 participants , Jasleen Kaur of B A Ist bagged first position, Manjot Kaur , B A IInd year on  second place and Tanishjot Kaur of B A final year and Navjot Kaur of B A I st bagged the combined third position.

Paper Presentation:-

Presented a paper "Political Participation of Women in India: An Analysis" in 15th International Conference on "Empowering Women For A Sustainable Future" organised by Women’s Studies Centre Punjabi University Patiala on 23rd April 2024.

Guest Lecture:-

Delivered a guest lecture on the topic "Contemporary Challenges to Human Rights" at the Department of Political Science, Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib on 09/10/2024.

Faculty Induction Programme:-

Attended 132nd Faculty Induction Programme from 29-11-24 to 26-12-24  organized by the UGC-Malviya Mission Teacher Training Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Session 2022-23
Departmental Achievements

1. On 14 August 2022, 20 students of the department participated in the Partition Horror Remembrance Day organised on the eve of Indian Independence by A. S. College, Khanna in which a movie was shown to the students in the Seminar Hall of the college. 

2. On 15 October 2022, 10 girls with their parents participated in the Seminar on the title NRI MARRIAGES: ਕੀ ਕਰੀਏ ਅਤੇ ਕੀ ਨਾ ਕਰੀਏ; ਅਗਲਾ ਰਾਹ organized by the Punjab State Women Rights Commission in collaboration with Panjab University Chandigarh at A. S. College, Khanna.
3. On 26 November 2022, in collaboration with NSS unit of the college, the department celebrated Constitution Day in which 50 participants took pledge to obey the Constitution and gathered knowledge about Fundamental Duties.
4. On 25 January 2023, in collaboration with NSS unit of the college, the department organized 13th National Voters Day in which 35 participants took pledge to cast their votes impartially, 11 students participated in Speech Competition and 5 students made posters on the spot.
5. On 7 November 2022, 12 students performed langar preparation and distribution duties regarding “Sanjiwalta Diwas” which was celebrated by the college.
6. Under the banner of PU G20 Youth Fortnight, in association with Dr. Shiv Kumar and Dr. Yashmeen Sofat, the department organised a power-point presentation competition on “Development of Proof of Concept Prototype on Industry 4.0”. A total of 30 students participated in this competition. Parvesh Sharma and Sukhjinder Singh of BCA 4th Semester,
Yogita Yadav of M. Com. 4th Semester and Sehajkirat Singh of B. Com.2nd Semester won 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively.
7. Miss Harinder Kaur student of M A 4th semester got 7th position in Panjab University examinations.

8. Mr Balraj Singh student of M A 1st semester got 9th position in Punjab University examinations.
9. Miss Ritika Bains, Miss Mandeep Kaur and Miss Navjot Kaur, students of M.A. 3rd Semester secured 2nd, 3rd and 5th position respectively in the Panjab University Merit List in P.U. Examination December 2022.
10. On 7th April 2023, the department organised a one day educational trip to Barog, Dagshai, Pinjore Garden and Shri Nadha Sahib Gurudwara
